Markilux: Built Green To Protect The Environment

Any product that saves energy can be considered "green"--but only as green as its manufacturing process. If energy is wasted building the product, if our air or water is polluted during manufacture, or if there is excessive waste in a poorly designed and produced product, then no amount of energy savings will make up for it.

The 450,000 square foot Markilux factory has been praised as a "green factory," exceeding all European Union and U.S. standards for pollution control, energy efficiency and recycling of waste. Markilux designs and produces every part of their highly durable retractable awning frameworks, mechanisms and awning fabric covers in-house, so the entire product installed at your home is more environmentally-friendly than any other awning product on the market.

Most awnings sold in the United States are not actually manufactured here, but assembled from parts produced largely in developing countries. These countries typically have limited or no environmental standards for pollution control or sustainable manufacturing. There are many awning factories in those countries churning out thousands of low-quality awnings, awning parts, and awning fabrics and covers--many of which end up here in the United States.

Before founding SensorShade Solutions, our partners visited many of the largest and best-known awning manufacturers around the world. What we found at most factories appalled us:

Metal shavings dumped in waterways and on open land
Paints stored uncovered
No pollution capture technology on paints, solvents and other chemical processes
Lack of protective eyewear for workers during dangerous processes
A general lack of safety procedures in the plants
Improper storage of parts and equipment without effective restraints
Lack of air circulation and respiration precautions for workers using paints and other chemicals
Manufacturing "sludge" being dumped down the drain

Our goal was to do business with a manufacturer that shared our passion for the environment and fair treatment of employees. We made a conscious choice not to sell products made in a way that does not protect the environment or the workers producing them. We also chose not to go the route of most retractable awning companies in the U.S. and assemble awnings from parts made overseas in such conditions, even if we could not have been expected to know the details of those conditions.

We care for the environment and for people, and don't believe a higher profit margin justifies harming the earth or workers. We're very proud to represent Markilux, a third generation family-owned company which incorporates the highest level of environmental and worker protections in every aspect of their business practices.

If you truly want to "go green," make sure you are aware of all of the implications of how the products you buy are made. And beware of products whose low costs seem too good to be true.
