If you are trying to create a space that is shaded from the sun that can serve as an outdoor room, or if you have an existing patio or deck that needs shading, there are two main alternatives:
1) Lateral Arm Retractable Awnings have arms that open out nearly parallel to the ground – there are no supporting structures attached to the ground or the wall. This type of Markilux awning can be coupled to create a single awning of up to 45 feet wide, and multiple awnings can be placed side-by-side to cover even larger areas.
The furthest projection (distance from the building wall) a lateral arm retractable awning can achieve is 13 feet – beyond that the fundamental physics of the weight of the fabric becomes too much to safely support. That’s a sufficient distance on most balconies and patios to provide a very nice outdoor space that integrates seamlessly with your indoor decor.
Markilux also offers a free-standing awning called Syncra that has a single, upside down U-shaped frame, upon which two retractable awnings are mounted back-to-back. This can provide coverage of 26 feet in total width.
For further information about our retractable patio and deck awnings, go to Patio & Deck Awnings Specifications At A Glance.
2) Retractable Awnings and Canopies for Arbors, Pergolas, Trellises, Sunrooms and Conservatories can cover spaces up to 23 feet away from the building edge. However, this type of awning needs a supporting structure underneath – which means fixed posts and beams. Many people already have an open arbor or trellis structure over their deck or patio, but find that they still get too much sun exposure for comfort. In this case, a Markilux awning can be mounted on top of the structure, and extend out 23 feet. If you don’t have an existing structure, Markilux has an excellent frame system that perfectly matches our awnings.
Width is not a problem in installations of canopy-style awnings, as multiple Markilux awnings can be coupled together to cover up to 64 feet wide in a unit that appears to be a single unit. In addition, multiple coupled units can be mounted side-by-side to cover huge spaces.
A structure with a canopy-style retractable awning on top can be turned into a full outdoor room with the addition of side awnings and/or vertical drop exterior blinds. It is also easy to add lighting and heating to the structure for year round, day and night comfort.
All of Markilux’s retractable sunroom and canopy-style awnings can be used on top of the glass of sunrooms – including curved conservatory awnings that can cover the top and front of a sunroom. Markilux also offers a beautiful, unique under-glass retractable shade for sunrooms. These are often used in high-rises or in situations where outdoor installations of an awning is not possible.
