Markilux Retractable Window Awnings & Exterior Solar Screens Installation

How To Select Retractable Commercial Window Awnings and Vertical Drop Exterior Blinds/Exterior Solar Shades

If you simply want to block the sun from your building's windows, an exterior window awning or exterior solar screen/vertical drop blind is the tried and true solution. These can be operated manually from inside the building, or they can be motorized. There are two types of this commercial shade solution:

1) Retractable Window Awnings, also known as “side-arm window awnings”, are a classic window awning style. The awning cassette sits above the window. When extended, an arm on either side of the window lowers to hold the fabric away from the window. The fabric can be relatively short to only block the sun from the upper area of the window, or if early morning or late afternoon sun is a problem, the fabric can be long enough to cover the entire window.

2) Exterior Solar Screens/Vertical Drop Blinds have a cassette that sits above the window or inside the frame of the window at the top of the window frame. The fabric drops straight down to shade the window from the sun. While any of our fabrics can be used in this type of shading system, most of our commercial awning customers in the United States use the Markilux Transilk or Transolair fabrics, which are “solar screens”. This means that the fabrics block about 90% of the sunlight, but you can still see through the fabric and maintain your view.

Our Marquisolette product line, which is half window awning and half exterior solar screen, provides a stylish look and unique functionality.
