Many people ask how we came to be in the business of custom-made designer awnings and exterior solar screens. Several years ago we purchased a house that had extensive south and west facing decks and windows. We loved the decks and the views - perfect for indoor-outdoor entertaining and living. However, we found that we could never get the shade coverage on the deck we wanted with umbrellas. For most of the year, the decks were cooking in the sun. Even worse, when the sun hit our view windows we loved so much, it turned our house into an oven.During our travels to Europe we had many pleasant experiences enjoying meals and drinks at nice restaurants and hotels under the shade of an elegant retractable awning. We also saw that many commercial buildings used retractable awnings and window shades in a variety of ways to extend space or to manage thermal gain and reduce or eliminate the need for air conditioning.
We realized that there was a huge need for awnings in the U.S. for outdoor dining, and also to provide shade solutions for multi-unit residential buildings, office, churches and schools. However, when we began to look for retractable awnings and canopies here in the U.S. we were horribly disappointed. Most available retractable deck and patio awnings sold here were poorly designed and constructed with low quality materials. They also lacked the style needed for commercial installations. They simply did not provide an effective and stylish sun shading system.
Ultimately, we found what we were looking for in Germany.
