Retractable Cassette Awnings Add Profitable Space For Rosewood Hotel

Markilux North America completed a project at the new Rosewood Hotel in Menlo Park, CA, part of the Rosewood Hotel Group which was named the World's Leading Luxury Hotel Brand by the World Travel Awards. As such, they are meticulous in the selection of any products used on their properties.

The facility includes its signature Madera Restaurant, a Michelin one-star award winner. Diners can enjoy a pleasing view of the foothills west of San Francisco Bay, and the restaurant included an exterior patio area where patrons could enjoy the pleasant weather for which this area is known.

With southwest facing windows and patio, the restaurant was exposed directly to the afternoon sun and heat. The Rosewood Hotel contacted Markilux North America to discuss how their shade solutions could help them take advanatage of the views, take full advantage of the outdoor patio space,reduce cooling costs for the indoor restaurant, and maximize the comfort of their guests.

The results of the project have been outstanding! The awnings allowed the restaurant to add two tables to the patio seating area, plus they are able to use the patio seating significantly more--even on chilly evenings using heaters because the awnings help trap and reflect the heat back to the seating area. After carefully evaluating the performance and design requirements, the Markilux team and the Rosewood Hotel decided to install theMarkilux 6000 retractable cassette awning with a motorized Shade-Plus Valance. The 6000 is a full cassette awning that incorporates all of the leading technology for which Markilux is renowned worldwide, including the remarkable "bionic tendon" arm mechanism.

The installation included two Markilux 6000 awnings that were coupled to provide shade coverage 46 feet wide with an 11 foot awning projection when extended. In addition to providing comfortable shade for diners on the outdoor patio, the retractable cassette awning eliminates direct sunlight on the restaurant windows. This eliminates solar gain, which minimizes the energy required to cool the interior space. When not in use, the 6000 retracts into a stylish cassette that fully protects the awning fabric and mechanisms from the elements while blending seamlessly with the building's exterior decor.

As a further enhancement, the Rosewood Hotel included a motorized Shadeplus Valance in their 6000 to control the very difficult sun that sits low in the late afternoon sky. The valance drops down from the 6000 cassette to provide comfortable shade while blocking the glare of direct sunlight. The 6000 also offers the ability to include integrated lighting and radiant heating if needed on a project.
